What tv.youtube.com/start actually is

It is the address YouTube TV sends you to when you activate a device: you sign in there with your Google Account and enter the code your television is showing. Depending on the device and the version of the app, YouTube TV may use that address or another Google sign-in page.

Only ever type the address your own TV displays, and read it before you enter anything. If a page you reached some other way asks for your Google password or for a payment, close it.

How to activate YouTube TV, step by step

Nine steps, the same on every supported device. Keep the remote nearby and your phone in your hand.

1

Turn on your device

Turn on your Smart TV or streaming device.

2

Open the YouTube TV app

Open the YouTube TV application on the device.

3

Choose Sign In or Activate

Select the Sign In or Activate option in the app.

4

Note the code

Write down the activation code shown on your television, if one appears.

5

Open a browser

Open a web browser on your phone, tablet or computer.

6

Go to the address your TV shows

Visit the activation address the app displays, and check it matches what is on the screen.

7

Sign in with Google

Sign in with the Google Account that holds your YouTube TV subscription.

8

Enter the code

Enter the activation code if you are asked for one, then finish the on-screen steps.

9

Go back to the TV

Return to your television and start watching.

Troubleshooting

When activation is not working: five fixes

Nearly every activation failure is one of these five, and none of them needs a support call.

schedule

The activation code has expired

Codes are short-lived. Go back to the app on your TV, ask for a new code, and enter it before it times out.

language

The activation page will not load

Clear your browser cache, try another browser, and check your internet connection. If the page still stalls, do it from your phone instead.

hourglass_empty

The app freezes or closes

Restart the streaming device, then check for a software update. If it keeps happening, uninstall the YouTube TV app and install it again.

credit_card

Your subscription is not recognised

You may be signed in with a different Google Account from the one the subscription is on. Sign out, sign back in with the right one, and check the subscription on the YouTube TV website.

wifi

Playback buffers or stops

Restart your router, close other apps using the connection, and check that your device meets YouTube TV's requirements.

No YouTube activation step asks you to call a number

If you are stuck and searching for help, this is the moment to be careful. Numbers attached to unofficial help pages reach call centres with no connection to YouTube TV, and the people on the other end of them know you are mid-problem and frustrated.

  • payments

They want a fee to activate a device that activation would set up for free.

  • screen_share

They ask for remote access to your device, or for your Google password.

  • account_balance

They want to be paid by gift card, bank transfer or crypto.

  • warning

They call themselves official support, but no number appears anywhere on your TV.

Answers

Questions people ask about YouTube TV activation

Open the YouTube TV app on the television, select Sign In, and follow the instructions on screen. If the TV shows a code, enter it at the activation address the app displays.

Usually an expired code, a stale browser cache, or a dropped connection. Ask the app on your TV for a fresh code, clear your browser cache or try another browser, and reload the page.

Through Google's own help centre, which lists the contact options open to you. Search for YouTube TV help, or go to support.google.com/youtubetv.

No number appears on your television at any point in activation, and the activation flow never asks you to call one. Treat any number advertised as YouTube TV support by an unofficial page as untrusted.

On many devices, yes. Some let you sign in to the Google Account directly on the TV, or by scanning something with your phone. Use whichever sign-in option the app offers you.

Check that you are signing in with the Google Account your subscription is on, confirm the subscription is active, restart the app, and make sure the connection is stable.

It works on a range of supported devices, and how many people can watch at once depends on the plan you are on. Google's own device and plan pages list the current details.

Official support

  • credit_card

Your subscription is active, but nothing will stream.
